Single Tilt Out Trash Can Cabinet | Simple DIY Project

Summertime is upon us, which means we'll be spending a lot more time outside enjoying the warm weather. We'll be spending time in the pool, having cookouts, and enjoying time with friends and family. As we eat up all that delicious food and sip on the drinks, the trash will pile up. No one wants to have a basic-looking trash can outside that doesn't match any of the outdoor furniture. My friend asked me to build up something to disguise the trash can and make it look good. I told him, "No problem, I got you.". A few hours later, I had an idea then I got to work.

I decided to build a tilt-out cabinet out of cedar to hide the trash can. It's a DIY project that requires some basic woodworking skills and tools that someone could tackle on a free weekend and create something awesome. A tilt-out cabinet is a type of cabinet that has a front panel that tilts outwards from the bottom, allowing easy access to the contents inside. Here are some benefits of a tilt-out cabinet:

  1. Space-saving: Tilt-out cabinets are great space-savers as they allow you to store items such as trash bins or laundry hampers inside the cabinet, without taking up valuable floor space in your kitchen or laundry room.

  2. Convenience: A tilt-out cabinet allows easy access to the contents inside, making it a convenient option for items that need to be frequently accessed, such as trash or laundry. Additionally, tilt-out cabinets can be placed at a height that is comfortable for the user, reducing the need for bending or lifting heavy objects.

  3. Aesthetics: Tilt-out cabinets can add to the aesthetics of your space as they can be designed to match the style and finish of your other cabinetry. Additionally, by concealing items such as trash bins or laundry hampers, tilt-out cabinets can help maintain a clean and organized appearance in your space.

  4. Customizability: Tilt-out cabinets can be customized to fit your specific needs and preferences. For example, you can choose the size and shape of the cabinet, as well as the type of front panel and hardware that you prefer.

  5. Versatility: Tilt-out cabinets can be used in a variety of spaces, such as kitchens, laundry rooms, and bathrooms. They can be used to store a range of items, such as trash, laundry, cleaning supplies, or even pet food.

To get started, here are the basic steps to build a tilt-out cabinet or you can check out my youtube video above:

  1. Design and plan: Decide on the size and design of your cabinet based on your needs and available space. Sketch out your design and create a plan for the cabinet, including the materials needed. I bought a trash can on Amazon then I created my dimensions around that. This project is built from Cedar 2x4's and 1x4's.

  2. Cut the wood: Using a saw, cut the wood for the cabinet frame and front panel. Sand the edges and surfaces of the wood to make it smooth.

  3. Assemble the cabinet frame: Use Kreg Pocket Hole Jig, wood glue, some screws and clamps to assemble the cabinet frame.

  4. Finish the cabinet: Sand the cabinet and apply a coat of paint or stain to match the finish of your other cabinetry, if desired. I used the Olympic Elite Stain and Sealant from Home Depot.

  5. Install the hinges: Install the hinges onto the front panel and the cabinet frame. Make sure the hinges are level and aligned.

  6. Install the hardware: Install any necessary hardware, such as a handle or knob, onto the front panel.

  7. Attach the front panel: Attach the front panel to the cabinet frame using the hinges. Make sure the panel is level and aligned with the frame.

  8. Test the tilt-out function: Test the tilt-out function of the cabinet to make sure it opens and closes smoothly.

Note: These are general steps, and the specific steps may vary depending on the design of your cabinet and the tools and materials you use. Always follow safety precautions when using power tools and handling wood.

Overall, tilt-out cabinets offer a convenient and space-saving storage solution that can be customized to fit your specific needs and preferences. Whether you're looking to add functionality to your kitchen or keep your laundry room organized, a tilt-out cabinet can be a great addition to your space.
