DIY Home Improvement: Changing a Light Switch in Six Simple Steps

When you first move into a new house, they normally have those lame outdated single-pole light switches. That is one of the multiple reasons to update the light switches in your house. Upgrading to a more modern switch can improve performance and add new features like dimming or smart home integration. Modern switches can be energy efficient and help you save money by allowing you to adjust the amount of light in a room based on your needs. Visually, you can improve the aesthetic appeal of your home by choosing from a variety of styles and finishes to match your decor and create a cohesive look throughout your home.

When we first moved into our house, all of the light switches were one of the single-pole switches. One of my first objectives in making the house our own was updating the light switches and plates. I purchased a bulk pack of rocker light switches to remove all the light switches in our house. There are about 40 switches in our house in total. It took a little bit of time to change them out but I just took my time and did a few switches at a time as this was only an aesthetic thing. It did not affect the functionality of the house.

Changing a light switch is a relatively simple DIY project that can be completed in just six steps. However, it does involve working with electrical wiring, so it's important to take safety precautions and turn off the power before you begin. Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Turn off the power: Before you start, turn off the power to the circuit you'll be working on. You can do this by turning off the corresponding breaker in your electrical panel.

  2. Remove the old switch: Remove the switch cover plate and unscrew the screws holding the switch in place. Pull the switch out of the box and use a voltage tester to confirm that the power is off.

  3. Disconnect the wires: Take note of which wires are connected to which terminals on the switch. Carefully disconnect the wires by loosening the screws holding them in place. You may need to use wire cutters to trim any excess wire.

  4. Connect the new switch: Connect the wires to the corresponding terminals on the new switch, tightening the screws securely. Make sure that the wires are not touching each other or any metal parts of the box.

  5. Install the new switch: Carefully push the new switch back into the box and screw it in place. Attach the cover plate and turn the power back on.

  6. Test the switch: Turn the power back on and test the switch to make sure it's working properly. If everything looks good, you're done!

Remember to always work carefully and follow safety guidelines when working with electrical wiring. If you're not comfortable with this type of project, it's always best to consult a professional electrician. Overall, changing a light switch can be a quick and easy way to improve the performance and appearance of your home.
